May employment up over year, previous month

Figures released Monday, June 24, 2013, by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroads employed 164,249 people in mid-May, up 1.05% from May 2012, and up 474 people, or 0.29%, from the previous month of April. The gains were roughly comparable to the employment gains reported a month ago for both year-over-year and monthly employment.

Robert Johnson, who has spent 32 years with BNSF Railway and its predecessors, most recently as General Manager-Northwest Division, has been appointed Canadian Pacific Railway’s Vice President U.S. Operations. He replaces Senior Vice President U.S. Operations Doug McFarlane (pictured), who has announced his retirement after 37 years with CP in both Canada and the United States.

U.S. carloads, intermodal gain in latest week: AAR

U.S freight carload traffic edged up 0.5% the week ending June 15, 2013, and U.S. intermodal volume advanced 1.7% for the week, measured against the comparable period in 2012, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday, June 20.

AAR to Senate panel: PTC deadline unrealistic. Here’s why

Association of American Railroads President and CEO Edward R. Hamberger on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 told a Senate Commerce Committee panel that, despite investments of roughly $2.8 billion since 2008 on implementing positive train control (PTC) to meet the Rail Safety Improvement Act deadline of Dec. 31, 2015, the freight railroads have determined it will not be possible to have a fully interoperable nationwide PTC system up and running by that time.
