FRA committee OKs HSR crashworthiness standards

VIA Rail Canada, union reach tentative accord

VIA Rail Canada announced Friday, June 14, 2013, that it has reached an agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union, which represents some 2,200 service, sales office and maintenance personnel.

MTA awards “final” Second Ave. Subway contract

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced Thursday, June 13, 2013, that it had awarded a contract for the “station finishes, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, ancillary buildings and entrances for the 86th Street Station of the Second Avenue Subway.”

STB authorizes California HSR construction

The Surface Transportation Board on Thursday, June 13, issued a decision authorizing the California High Speed Rail Authority to construct a 65-mile high speed passenger rail line between Merced and Fresno, Cal., which will be the first section of the planned statewide California High-Speed Train System. The authorization “is subject to environmental conditions and the condition that CHSRA build the route designated by the Federal Railroad Administration as environmentally preferable,” STB said.

Amtrak’s vision must navigate the money trap

A mark, a yen, a buck, a pound, money makes the world go round. (Yes, lyrics from the musical, Cabaret.) But money is a scarce commodity, especially for Amtrak, which competes with other publicly funded projects—not the least being mass transit, aging water and sewer systems, highways, commercial aviation, and ports.

NJT adds (flood-resistant) storage capacity

Criticized for its response last fall to Superstorm Sandy, and the resultant damage to much of its rolling stock, New Jersey Transit has responded by securing storage space at two locations adjacent to its rail system but in more flood-resistant interior portions of the state.

U.S. carloads down, intermodal up, in latest week

Back to recent form: U.S. freight carload traffic for the week ending June 8, 2013, returned to its “mixed” trands, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday, June 13. U.S. freight carload traffic fell 2.8% measured against the comparable week in 2012, while intermodal continued its winning streak, up 2.5%.

Court dismisses chemical industry rail safety suit

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. has turned aside a challenge by chemical makers to a Federal Railroad Administration regulation involving the safety of chemical shipments and by rail, including in relationship to implementing Positive Train Control (PTC).

Connecticut electrification bill’s impact doubted

Both houses of Connecticut’s state legislature have unanimously passed a bill calling for electrification of Metro-North Railroad’s Waterbury Branch and the Danbury Branch by 2023, bolstering access between Waterbury, Conn., and New York’s Grand Central Terminal.

Philadelphia transit tour: 14 rail lines in 10 hours

As I write this, it’s been just a week since I returned from the recent annual Rail Transit Conference sponsored the first week of June by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) in Philadelphia. It was an interesting event, with a lot I could report about, including my own presentation at the “Current Technology and Trends” session. But by far my most memorable experience was completing (or should I say “surviving”?) another of Tom Hickey’s legendary multimode, multi-system rail-hopping tours — this one sampling 14 different transit modes or lines in the Philadelphia region, operated by three different agencies, in the course of 10 hours.
