U.S. intermodal up, carloads even, in latest week

U.S. freight carload traffic during the week ending June 22, 2013 held its ground, “essentially flat” when measured against the comparable week in 2012, the Asssociation of American Railroads reported Thursday, June 27. U.S. intermodal volume, by contrast, kept on rolling, up 2.7% compared with the same week last year.

MBTA bumps locomotive order to 40 units

MotivePower, a unit of Wabtec Corp., has signed a contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to supply 13 additional, next-generation HSP46 passenger locomotives to be delivered in 2014. The locomotives, which will be compliant with EPA Tier 3 and FTA Buy America, are manufactured in Boise, Idaho, with major components supplied by GE Transportation of Erie, Pa.

Local funding OK’d for Minneapolis streetcar plan

The Minneapolis City Council approved a plan Tuesday, June 25, 2013, to commit local funds to a proposed streetcar line for Minnesota’s largest city, to be integrated with the Twin Cities’ growing light rail transit network.

STB urged to halt Princeton Dinky truncation

Two advocacy groups on Monday, June 24, 2013 filed a petition with the Surface Transportation Board to block New Jersey Transit Corp. and Princeton University from hacking away at NJT’s Princeton Branch, a branch line linking its namesake town with Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.

Orange County balks at Anaheim streetcar plan

Plans for a $319 million, 3.2-mile streetcar in Anaheim, Calif., are meeting resistance from the Orange County Transportation Authority, even though OCTA has set aside $13 million for engineering and planning purposes.

Cincinnati streetcar bolstered by extra funds

The Cincinnati City Council Budget and Finance Committee, including all nine members of the full council, voted Monday, June 24, to approve a funding plan offered by City Manager Milton Dohoney to close a $17.4 million revenue gap for modern streetcar construction.

For CP, a rapid recovery from Alberta floods

Canadian Pacific said Monday, June 24 that its main line west of Calgary through the Banff-Canmore region of Alberta is now open after operations crews successfully restored segments impacted by the extreme weather the preceding week. A portion of CP track in Calgary was expected to reopen late on June 24, fully restoring the railroad’s main line. A segment of CP’s south line to Lethbridge, Alberta, was expected be fully restored by Thursday, June 27.

Amtrak Niantic River Bridge replacement completed

Amtrak has completed its three-year Niantic River Bridge Replacement Project, “which provides improved operational reliability for rail passengers along the Northeast Corridor with increased train speeds, less disruption to the boating community, and expanded beach access to area residents,” the railroad said on Monday, June 24.
