CTA OKs car overhaul contracts

Chicago Transit Authority’s Board of Directors has approved two contracts purchasing replacement and upgrade parts for CTA’s 2100-series rail car fleet, totaling about $166 million.

PATH focuses on new Harrison (N.J.) station

Metro-North Railroad opened its new West Haven, Conn., station to revenue passengers on Sunday, Aug. 18. West Haven Station is located between Milford Station and New Haven on the railroad’s New Haven Line.

CP and UP forge Canada-to-California CBR corridor

For the past year, BNSF Railway has dominated in the shipment of crude by rail (CBR) from North America’s Bakken shale formation westward to refineries and ship terminals along America’s Pacific Coast. Now, Canadian Pacific and Union Pacific are teaming up to move crude oil from Canada south into California.

Carper reappointed to Amtrak board

Tom Carper, who served as an Amtrak board member from March 2008 to March 2013 and was elected Chairman in January 2009, serving in that capacity until his term expired, has been reappointed. He was nominated for reappointment by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve another five-year term.

More upgrades to 30th Street Station under way

Amtrak will continue work this summer and fall on several upgrades at its historic Philadelphia 30th Street Station on the Northeast Corridor “to improve the passenger experience, tend to the long-term infrastructure needs of the 80-year-old building, and improve pedestrian mobility in and around the facility.” The projects represent about a $35 million investment.

Intermodal leads U.S. weekly traffic gain

The Association of American Railroads, for the week ending Aug. 10, 2013 reported intermodal volume of 257,969 units, up 6.1% compared with the same week last year, and 288,803 carloads, down 0.2% compared with the 2012 week. Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was 546,772 combined carloads and intermodal units, up 2.7% compared with last year.

NJT’s Frank Bookstaver: From steam to state-of-the-art

In his 65-year railroading career, New Jersey Transit’s Frank Bookstaver has seen and worked through more changes in the industry than most railroaders would care to admit—and he’s proud of it. Bookstaver, 85, retired July 6 as NJ Transit’s Assistant Chief Dispatcher at the agency’s ROC (Rail Operations Center). NJT honored him on Wednesday, Aug. 14, with a special ceremony during the agency’s August Board of Directors meeting.

MM&A loses Canadian operating license

The Montreal, Maine & Atlantic lost its license to operate in Canada on Tuesday, August 13, after regulators there decided it doesn’t carry enough liability insurance, Maine’s Portland Press Herald has reported.
