Rick Corman, 1955-2013

Richard J. “Rick” Corman, founder of R. J. Corman Railroad Group, died the morning of Aug. 23, 2013, following a 12-year battle with multiple myeloma. Corman died at his home in Nicholasville, Ky., surrounded by his family. He was 58.

Potash resilient after consortium break-up

One of railroading’s least-recognized commodities found itself in the global spotlight this summer. On July 30, Russian potash producer Uralkali announced it was severing ties to the Belarusian Potash Company, a joint marketing venture with rival producer Belaruskali. Uralkali’s exit was in response to Belaruskali making independent sales of potash to China.

MTA Long Island Rail Road says it will hold a public hearing Aug. 27 on a proposal to restore half-hourly service on its Port Washington Branch on weekends, as well as on a proposal to operate weekend service on the Ronkonkoma Branch between Ronkonkoma and Greenport for approximately 10 additional weekends each year. 

Parsons hails CHSRA contract milestone

Pasadena, Calif.-based Parsons Corp. expressed enthusiasm Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, over the contract executed by the California High-Speed Rail Authority with the Tutor Perini/Zachry/Parsons joint venture for the first segment of the the state’s 700-mile high speed rail system.

U.S. freight traffic flexes mid-August muscle

Both U.S. carload freight traffic and U.S. intermodal volume advanced during the week ending Aug. 17, 2013, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday, Aug. 22, with total U.S. rail traffic rising 2.0% measured against the comparable week of 2012.

CP ordered to interchange trains with MM&A

Oklahoma City panel chooses streetcar route

A recommended route for a 4.6-mile downtown streetcar route has been selected by an Oklahoma City advisory panel, with the proposal advancing to a full citizens advisory board and the City Council for review. Approval from both bodies is expected.

Group seeks revived Queens, N.Y., rail route

Crude by rail: The outlook is good

“Narrowing oil price differentials are impacting carloadings in the near term, but should not deter shippers from making long-term investments in crude-by-rail, which has many inherent logistical benefits that can override price in determining a transportation mode in certain scenarios,” says Cowen and Co. Managing Director and Railway Age Contributing Editor Jason H. Seidl. “Price differentials may slow CBR but won’t stop it.”

CHSRA, joint venture sign Stage 1 contract

The California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has signed a $985.1 million design-build contract with a California-based joint venture of Tutor Perini, Zachry Construction, and Parsons for civil works on the first section of the state’s high speed rail network.

Private equity firm acquires Nordco, Inc.

Nordco Inc. said late Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, that it has been acquired by Greenbriar Equity Group LLC, a New York-based private equity firm focused on global transportation. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
