LRT boosts Salt Lake City economy: Study

Salt Lake City’s TRAX LRT has generated 1,300 new jobs that have spurred an estimated $225 million in value to the local economy, according to a study conducted by the Economic Development Research Group, a Boston-based research company LRV supplier Siemens retained to assess the system’s economic impact.

SEPTA to acquire ACS-64 electric locomotives

The board of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has approved the acquisition of up to 18 ACS-64 electric locomotives from Siemens as part of its budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which starts July 1, 2015.

Siemens lands $1.86 billion German contract

Siemens has officially been awarded a €1.7 billion (US$1.86 billion) contract by Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr Transport Authority (VRR) to supply 82 Desiro High Capacity (HC) EMUs for the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) network and maintain the fleet for 32 years.

Siemens ACS-64 production hits halfway mark

As February ended, Siemens’s Sacramento, Calif., plant sent out its 35th Amtrak Cities Sprinter 64 (ACS-64) electric locomotive, reaching the halfway mark of its planned delivery of 70 units.

MTS adds S70 LRVs to San Diego Blue Line

San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 said Siemens S70 low-floor light rail vehicles now have been added to the Blue Line, the system’s initial route linking downtown San Diego and San Ysidro, Calif., just short of the U.S.-Mexico border.

San Francisco taps Siemens for additional LRVs

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is exercising an option with Siemens for 40 additional SF200 low-floor light rail vehicles (LRVs), boosting the number of LRVs on order to 215. The option is worth $210 million.

Atlanta streetcar to open Dec. 30

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, that the 2.7-mile Atlanta streetcar line would be officially launched for service on Dec. 30, fulfilling a pledge by the mayor last April to open the line before the end of 2014.

Siemens to equip Metrorrey Line 3

Siemens has been awarded a contract worth approximately €25 million (US$32 million) by the state government of Nuevo León (Secretaría de Obras Públicas del Estado de Nuevo León) to equip Metro Line 3 in Monterrey, Mexico with telecommunications, signaling, and operations control systems. This roughly four-mile-long new line will connect residential areas and the metropolitan hospital in the northeast of the city with the city center. Metrorrey Line 3 is scheduled to be commissioned in autumn 2015.

Siemens equipping Amtrak NJHSRIP project

Amtrak has contracted with Siemens to build a new Sitras SFC Plus static frequency converter for upgrading its Metuchen traction power facility in northern New Jersey, along the Northeast Corridor. The order includes the delivery, installation, commissioning, and integration of two 30-megawatt multilevel converters into the existing Amtrak 25-Hz traction power supply network to enable parallel operation with Amtrak’s existing converters.
