Oklahoma short line gets trackage rights

The Surface Transportation Board Wednesday announced approval of a trackage rights exemption sought be WFEC Railroad Co. “to grant limited nonexclusive overhead trackage rights to Kiamichi Railroad LLC (KRR), over its entire line” of roughly 15 miles.

Saskatchewan announces short line grants

Saskatchewan’s provincial government Monday announced C$700,000 in grants distributed among 11 short line railroads through its Shortline Railway Sustainability Program.

GWI traffic declines in March, 1Q

Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. said Friday its March 2012 traffic volume fell 13.6% compared with the same month a year ago. As well, GWI’s first-quarter traffic volume declined, though less dramatically, by 9.2% measured against the comparable quarter in 2011.

Merchandise commodity trends not encouraging

A question that’s been bugging me of late has to with what the short line scene will look like in 2016. I’m looking strictly at the commodities where most non-Class I carriers earn their bread and butter — the so-called merchandise sector, that is, everything but intermodal, coal, and automotive, from parts to finished vehicles. And the trends are not encouraging.

RailAmerica completes acquisition

Jacksonville, Fla.-based RailAmerica, Inc. announced that it has completed the acquisition of a 20% interest in the Wellsboro & Corning Railroad and Industrial Waste Group from Myles Group for approximately $18 million.

Georgia DOT seeks abandonment exemption

The George Department of Transportation has filed with the Surface Transportation Board for an Abandonment Exemption, in order “to abandon a 3.12-mile line of railroad between milepost 469.15 and milepost 472.27, which comprises a portion of a line known as the L&N Belt, in Fulton County, Ga. (West End Property).”

Reactivation of Arkansas short line sought

North Louisiana & Arkansas Railroad, Inc. (NLA) has petitioned the Surface Transportation Board for authority to lease and operate a 21.8-mile line of railroad extending from a point near Lake Village in Chicot County, Ark., to a location near Louisiana Arkansas border. The line is owned by the Southeastern Arkansas Economic Development District.

Obituary: Frederick A. Winkler, 83

Frederick A. Winkler, general agent  of the Winchester & Western Railroad and a powerful voice within New Jersey railroading, died peacefully at his home in Clarksboro, N.J., on March 24, at age 83.
