GWI 3Q earnings and revenue rise

Darien, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014 reported third-quarter net income of $72.9 million, compared with net income of $66.2 million in the third quarter of 2013. Excluding the net impact of certain significant items discussed below, G&W’s adjusted net income in the third quarter of 2014 was $69.3 million, compared with adjusted net income of $59.8 million in the third quarter of 2013.

Cape Canaveral short line eyes extension

Florida’s Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) has petitioned the Surface Transportation Board for permission to “construct and operate approximately 11 miles of new rail line to Port Canaveral (Port) in Brevard County, Florida.”

Honda cites Road & Rail Services for excellence

American Honda Motor Corporation (AHM) of North America has awarded Road & Rail Services, Inc., with two awards: “Processor of the Year Performance Excellence Award for 2014,” and “Superior Quality for 2014.” Both were presented to Road & Rail Services’ President Kevin Brandon at AMH’s annual award celebration in Torrance, Calif.

STB awards contract for rate regulation options

The Surface Transportation Board said it has awarded a contract to InterVISTAS Consulting LLC (InterVISTAS) “to conduct an independent analysis that evaluates potential alternative rate regulation approaches, with the goal of reducing the time, cost and complexity of rate reasonableness complaints brought before the Board.”

STB backs short line on propane terminal

The Surface Transportation Board on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, ruled in favor of a short line railroad seeking to build a propane storage facility in North Grafton, Mass., against the objections of local residents.

Cummins says it’s on top of Tier 4

With U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emissions regulations taking effect Jan. 1, 2015, Cummins Inc. says it’s well-prepared, with more than 100 engine installations on order for passenger locomotives, diesel multiple units (DMUs), and switcher locomotives in North America.

BNSF, Tacoma Rail strike deal

Tacoma Rail, a short line serving its namesake port facility and city in Washington State, has signed a contract with BNSF to supply fueling and maintenance needs for the Class I railroad.

Algoma Central, CN seek passenger service operators

The Algoma Central Railway Passenger Service Working Group is seeking a contract operator for ACR’s passenger service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ontario, and has issued a request for Expressions of Interest (EOI). The purpose of this non-binding invitation is to pre-qualify companies to participate in an upcoming Request for Proposal (RFP) process that will identify one or more parties to be part of a stakeholder plan to have a third party operate the service.

Pacific Harbor Line extends reach

Pacific Harbor Line said late Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 it is now “serving customers located in three industrial areas near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, linked to a 10-mile industrial spur owned by Union Pacific Railroad.”

R.J. Corman completes buy of TSE Railroad

R. J. Corman Railroad Company/Texas Lines LLC late Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 announced the purchase of the assets of Texas Southeastern Railroad (TSE), previously a subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific LLC.
