Hammond Awards honor UP, South Buffalo Railway employees

In conjunction with bestowing the Harriman Awards for corporate rail safety on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., industry leaders also took time to honor individual employees notching significant safety achievements, who were honored with the 2011 Harold F. Hammond Award. Receiving recognition for outstanding safety achievement during 2011 were — Joseph Faigl, conductor with Union Pacific Railroad, and Mark Sheffield, mechanical supervisor with the South Buffalo Railway Co.

Railroads with the industry’s best safety performance records Tuesday were honored at the annual E.H. Harriman Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., with the event also marking the industry’s nearly 100 year commitment to safety and innovation with the Centennial Award.

GWI leases Alabama short line from NS

Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming’s newly formed subsidiary, the Columbus & Chattahoochee Railroad, Inc. (CCR), has signed an agreement with Norfolk Southern to lease and operate a 26-mile segment of NS track in Alabama.

GWI 1Q net income rises modestly

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. early Tuesday reported net income in the first quarter of 2012 of $22.2 million, up from $22.1 million in the first quarter of 2011. GWI’s diluted earnings per share of 52 cents held steady in the quarter measured against the same period a year ago, though the company sported roughly 600,000 more weighted average shares outstanding in the latest report.

RailAmerica: Operating income up 57%

RailAmerica, Inc. reported late Wednesday that first-quarter revenue increased 15% to $143.4 million from $124.9 million in the first quarter last year. 2011. Freight revenue increased 10% to $107.8 million with average revenue per car up 7% and carloads up 3%. Non-freight revenue increased 30% to $35.6 million.

Hoback accepts Regional Railroad of the Year award

Indiana Rail Road Company (INRD) President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Hoback accepted Railway Age’s 2012 “Regional Railroad of the Year” award at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association’s national convention in Indianapolis April 24.
