Railway Interchange 2015 host organizations announced Thursday, March 12, 2015 that motivational speaker and retired U.S. Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill will deliver the keynote address for the conference and exhibition, being held Oct. 4-7, 2015 in Minneapolis.

Freight car backlog grows 75%

The backlog of freight cars grew by about 75% in 2014, according to fourth-quarter reporting statistics compiled by the Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee. As of Dec. 31, 2014, the backlog stood at 142,837 units, compared to 81,927 units at the end of 2014’s first quarter.

2015 OUTLOOK: Can we handle it?

Another year of record capital investment will be needed to build more capacity to keep up with growing demand.

Freight car backlog nears 125,000

The freight car backlog at the end of third-quarter 2014 amounted to 124,437 cars and platforms, the highest backlog level since October 1979’s 127,887 (when figures were compiled monthly), according to figures Railway Age obtained from Economic Planning Associates (EPA) and the Railway Supply Institute. This third-quarter’s backlog dwarfs prior high points of first-quarter 2006’s 86,853
 units and third quarter 1998’s 69,858.

RSI stats show 3Q14 car orders break record

The Railway Supply Institute on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 released its railcar industry order, delivery, and backlog statistics for the third quarter, noting the quarter was the largest ever for car orders, notching 42,900 cars.

Railway Interchange 2015 exhibit space available

Booth space reservations are now open for the indoor and outdoor exhibitions at Railway Interchange 2015, the U.S.-based combined exhibition and technical conference taking place Sunday, Oct. 4 through Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Minneapolis Convention Center and BNSF’s Northtown yard. Exhibits will be held Oct. 4-6.

RSI-CTC to PHMSA: “One size fits all” won’t work

In comments sent to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Dept. 30, 2014, the Railway Supply Institute Committee on Tank Cars (RSI-CTC) warned of “significant disruption to safety and to major sectors of the North American economy if mismatched rulemakings were to be implemented separately by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada.” These disruptions include “the loss of a significant portion of the rail tank car fleet during the modification period, and unintended consequences such as a potential increase in truck shipments of flammable liquids on highways.”
