In a move that some observers call surprising (and others not), New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joe Lhota resigned his post on Nov. 9, only one week after he expressed his intention to stick with the MTA at a board meeting.

ESA last big push goes to Skanska

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on Oct. 31 awarded its final major civil construction contract for the Long Island Rail Road East Side Access (ESA) project to Skanska USA Civil Northeast. The contract, valued at $60.2 million, includes two options that, if exercised, would bring the total value to $62.5 million. It’s among the final work needed to begin Long Island Rail Road service to Grand Central Terminal by year-end 2022.

MTA names Warren safety chief

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has named Patrick T. Warren as Chief Safety Officer, overseeing all safety management policy implementation. He will work closely with MTA agencies as they “continue to improve work practices and invest in new technology and equipment,” MTA said.

MTA taps Troup for ESA

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has appointed veteran railway engineering professional Arthur R. “Rob” Troup as Senior Program Executive of the MTA Long Island Rail Road East Side Access (ESA) project. MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber announced Troup’s appointment on Sept. 24.

A new report from the Regional Plan Association (RPA) calls for the merging of New York Metropolitan Area commuter railroads MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit into a single, integrated network called T-REX, for Trans-Regional Express.
