United Rail, Inc. announced on Jan. 6, 2016 a new partnership with German rail supply manufacturer, BBR Rail Automation GmbH (BBR), to represent and support its products and services to the North American freight and passenger rail transportation markets. United Rail will provide business development, sales and marketing, and engineering services support to BBR for the company’s work in North America.
The American Railway and Engineering Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) Educational Foundation, in cooperation with the US Committee to the Watford Group of International Railway Designers, has created a unique learning opportunity for an aspiring railway employee to gain international perspective of railroad design and operations called the “Watford Fellowship.” The Fellowship will consist of two paid registrations to the 2016 Watford Conference in the Scandinavian region of Europe, valued at approximately $1,400. The four-day conference, targeted for late October, includes presentations by the attendees in all aspects of railway planning and design with an emphasis on buildings, bridge and tunnel structures, and corporate identity.
Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp., has awarded ABB Canada’s power and automation technology division a contract to engineer, manufacture and commission seven ENVILINETM Energy Storage Systems (ESS) wayside energy management systems with lithium-ion battery storage technology from Saft America, for SEPTA’s (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) rail transit network.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board on Jan. 27, 2016 approved the final major contract for the East Side Access project, which will build and finish four platforms and eight tracks for the new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal some 100 feet below Grand Central Terminal.
BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) on Jan. 26, 2016 announced a $4.3 billion 2016 capital expenditure plan that “will focus on helping to ensure the company continues to operate a safe and reliable network this year and beyond. This year’s capital program reflects BNSF’s success in adding capacity to support customer demand while bringing investment more in line with current volumes,” the railroad said.
Brandon, Manitoba-based Cando Rail Services is expanding into British Columbia with the recent purchase of an 89-acre site in Kamloops for a new terminal. The terminal will have the capacity for 1,000 railcar storage spots, in addition to providing transloading, material handling, engineering and track and mechanical services.
After nearly three months and 57 entries later, Railway Age editors, along with judges Nick Little, Managing Director of Michigan State University’s Railway Management Program and Ronald L. Batory, President and Chief Operating Officer of Consolidated Rail Corporation, have selected the winning 10 in Railway Age’s inaugural Fast Trackers—10 Under 40 contest.
January 7, 2016: Carl R. Ice, President and Chief Executive Officer of BNSF Railway, has been named 2016 Railroader of the Year by railroad industry trade journal Railway Age. Ice is Railway Age’s 53rd Railroader of the Year.
