Given the Fourth of July effect in the most recent weekly data, we’ll give Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) a break from our weekly critique as it continues to try to restore fluidity after the May 3 U.S. IT cutover from
the old Kansas City Southern (KCS) Management Control System (MCS) to Canadian Pacific’s (CP) “TYES” system. Just kidding.

STB to NS: Proposed NPBL Acquisition Is ‘Significant’ Transaction (UPDATED 7/11)

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) on March 14 reported that it will review Norfolk Southern’s (NS) proposal to acquire Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Company (NPBL), a Virginia S&T (switching and terminal) railroad, as a “significant” transaction. NS in June provided the STB-required supplement to its acquisition application, and on July 7, the Board accepted the application as complete and set a procedural schedule.

Conrail TWU Members Ratify New Contract

Conrail Transport Workers Union (TWU) members in Detroit, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, voted “overwhelmingly” to ratify a new five-year contract that includes a 17.5% wage increase, with journeymen carmen making more than $100,000 a year by contract’s end.
