Caltrain celebrates the first anniversary of its electrified service. Also, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) celebrates the 30th anniversary of the F Market Line; the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) celebrates the 10th anniversary of the state’s purchase and rehabilitation of the “Knowledge Corridor”; Brightline announces network enhancements; new locomotives begin passenger service on Metro-North Railroad; and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) approves a request to purchase six more new railcars.

The Staten Island Railway (SIR) fleet is now entirely made up of the standard R211 subway cars. Also, August Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) ridership sees steady growth; Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) Silver Line will launch on Oct. 25; the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) CapeFLYER train reaches record ticket sales for the 2025 summer season; California legislature passes an authorizing ballot measure to address the Bay Area transit emergency; and LA Metro’s A Line Extension officially opens on Sept. 19.

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) releases its $21.5 billion draft six-year capital budget. Also, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) unveils its Cab Cam series, showcasing the agency’s entire system in 4K; Denver Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) transit police uses virtual reality technology to build upon real world technical skills; Caltrain installs digital displays at South Santa Clara County stations; and Gatekeeper announces a C$27 million Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) transit video project with New York Metropolitan Authority’s (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).

Senar is selected to develop a detailed design for Metrolinx’s Scarborough Subway Extension project in eastern Toronto. Also, two stations are dedicated on Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LACMTA) new Foothill Gold Line light rail segment; and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) members at Caltrain in Northern California ratify a new contract.

Caltrain Board signs off on Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 operating and capital budgets. Also, Orange County (Calif.) Transportation Authority (OCTA) outlines budget for upcoming fiscal year; California Senate and Assembly reach agreement to fund public transit, averting “mass service cuts”; Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in Texas pioneers transportation-agency participation in tax increment reinvestment zones across service-area cities; and Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) awards $1.25 million in transit-oriented development (TOD) grants.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) kicks off Purple Line LRV testing. Also, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) awards the Progressive Design-Build contract for the Bloor-Yonge Capacity Improvement project; and Caltrain earns a sustainability award.

Caltrain Implementing Asset Monitoring Tech at Crossings

California’s Caltrain has begun installing Herzog’s LiDAR and camera-based artificial intelligence (AI) system at its Churchill Avenue highway/rail grade crossing in Palo Alto to mitigate collisions between commuter rail trains and vehicles, people, or other objects, following an earlier installation at the Broadway Crossing in Burlingame.
