BNSF 3Q23: Net Income, Volumes Down

BNSF on Nov. 6 released third-quarter 2023 financial results, including net income of $1.221 billion, a 15% decline from the prior-year period’s $1.442 billion, and total volumes (in thousands) of 2,296, down 5% from 2022’s 2,411.

BNSF, BMWED Ratify Paid Sick Leave Deal

The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division-International Brotherhood of Teamsters (BMWED) on Oct. 31 reported ratifying an agreement with BNSF that includes paid sick days.

Karov Stepping Down as BNSF VP Labor Relations

BNSF Vice President Labor Relations Rob Karov is retiring after more than 30 years of service. Succeeding him is Sam Macedonio, the Class I railroad told Railway Age on Oct. 19.

UPDATE: NTSB Releases Memo for Determination of BNSF Minnesota Derailment 

On Monday, Oct. 16, NTSB Newsroom announced via Twitter that it has opened a docket “for its investigation of the March 30, 2023 derailment of a BNSF Railway freight train on the Marshall District in Raymond, Minnesota.”

BLET Ratifies ‘Quality of Life Agreement’ with BNSF

A majority of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) Divisions have ratified a systemwide agreement with BNSF that improves work-life balance for approximately 8,000 railroaders, four union General Chairmen reported Oct.

BNSF, SMART-TD Reach Tentative Agreement

The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, Transportation Division (SMART-TD) and BNSF Railway have reached a system-wide agreement, following up on the mandatory local bargaining items from last year’s Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) that the Class I says will “significantly benefit ground service employees.”
