$14.5MM OKd for Connell Rail Interchange Project

The Washington State Legislature has signed off on the 2023-25 Transportation Budget, which allocates $14.5 million to complete upgrades to the nearly 100-year-old Connell Rail Interchange located in the eastern part of the state.

Weather, Inflation Impact UP 1Q23 Results (Updated, TD Cowen and SFG Analysis)

“We delivered greater network fluidity and resiliency in the first quarter even as we faced a series of significant weather events,” Union Pacific Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz said during the Class I’s financial report on April 20. “In addition to the impact of weather on carload volumes and costs, higher inflation also reduced our operating income and more than offset our record first quarter operating revenue.”

TCC to Offer Ariz.-Based, UP-Served ‘Shovel-Ready’ Sites

A 192-acre site in Mesa, Ariz., will be divided into industrial-use subsites to be served by Union Pacific (UP), according to global real estate developer Trammell Crow Company (TCC), which recently acquired the property with a client of CBRE Investment Management.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Commuter Rail operating partner Keolis launch the “Why Go Green with Purple Sweepstakes?” Also, North Carolina’s intercity passenger rail service breaks 2019 ridership record; and New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) temporarily loses the ability to post real-time subway, commuter rail and bus service alerts via Twitter, and may soon have to pay for that feature.

BNSF, NS Reach Labor Agreements

BNSF on April 17 announced that it will grant individual paid sick days to its railroaders who are Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC) members. The same day, Norfolk Southern (NS) reported reaching a paid sick leave agreement with the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS).

Intermodal Briefs: BNSF, Port of LA

BNSF provides customers an intermodal update, citing “some improved service performance” while its teams address network-wide weather-related challenges. Also, the Port of Los Angeles closes a “soft” first-quarter 2023, down 32% from the prior-year period.
