Report: VA Tech Researchers Harness Energy From Moving Trains Into Usable Electricity

Researchers at the Virginia Tech Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS) and the Railway Technologies Laboratory have created a new kind of crosstie that replaces the conventional wooden variety and is equipped to generate power from moving trains, transforming that energy into usable electricity, according to a report by The Roanoke Star.

UITP Releases Sustainability Report

The International Association of Public Transports (UITP) on Jan. 23 released a new report, “The Road to Sustainability: Transition to Renewable Energy in Public Transport,” providing guidance on how public transport undertakings can “achieve a successful energy transition to their decarbonization goals, including examples of best practices across the globe.”

“The ONE CSX team made great progress this quarter, delivering strong earnings as our network performance continued to gain momentum,” CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs said during a Jan. 25 earnings announcement.

For CSX, fourth-quarter 2022 operating income was $1.46 billion compared to $1.37 billion in fourth-quarter 2021, while net earnings were $1.02 billion, or $0.49 per share, compared to $934 million, or $0.42 per share, in the same period last year, the Class I reported Jan. 25.

Registration Now Open for FRA-Sponsored ‘Tracks to the Future’ Summer Youth Program

Registration is now open for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-sponsored “Tracks to the Future” rail transportation and engineering summer youth program, which aims to teach students “why railroads remain the most energy-efficient transportation mode and what forms modern railroad track, equipment, and communications/control systems might take,” Michigan Technological University (MTU), which started the program, stated in a release.

G&W, EPA Reach Environmental Settlement

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Jan. 24 announced a settlement with Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. (G&W) and its affiliated companies for what it called a violation of Clean Air Act (CAA) locomotive regulations.

“Our team delivered double-digit percentage growth in revenue, as well as earnings per share and achieved record revenue and operating income for the year," NS President and CEO Alan H. Shaw said.

For Norfolk Southern (NS), fourth-quarter 2022 railway operating revenue was $3.2 billion, up 13%, or $385 million, compared with fourth-quarter 2021, a “fourth-quarter record” driven by a 15% increase in revenue per unit, the Class I reported Jan. 25.

Transit Briefs: Metrolinx, SEPTA, Northern Lights Express

Local transit systems join Metrolinx’s GO Transit in accepting credit card taps to pay transit fees. Also, countdown clocks are coming to Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) platforms this spring; and Minnesota legislators propose $99 million to kick-start the Northern Lights Express (NLX), which would connect downtown Minneapolis to the St. Louis County in Duluth.

“GATX produced solid financial results in 2022, with each business unit contributing to a positive year,” GATX President and CEO Robert C. Lyons said during a quarterly earnings announcement.

Chicago-based GATX Corp. has reported fourth-quarter 2022 net income from continuing operations of $48.4 million, or $1.36 per diluted share, compared with fourth-quarter 2021’s $61.0 million, or $1.69 per diluted share. For full-year 2022, net income was $155.59 million, or $4.35 per diluted share, versus the prior year’s $143.1 million, or $3.98 per diluted share.

LIRR Service to Grand Central Madison Set to Begin

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to Grand Central Madison will begin Wednesday, Jan. 25.
