RINA Acquires Patrick Engineering

Genoa, Italy-based inspection, certification and engineering consultancy firm RINA Group on Jan. 23 announced that it has entered the U.S. infrastructure market with the acquisition of Chicago-based engineering consultancy company Patrick Engineering Ltd.

Virginia CTB Approves New Rail Spur at Hershey Chocolate Facility

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) announced Jan. 18 that the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has approved a $450,000 grant through the agency’s Rail Industrial Program to Hershey Chocolate of Virginia Inc. for construction of a new 4,750-foot rail spur to be served by Norfolk Southern (NS) at the snack company’s Augusta County facility.

Amtrak Takes First Step to Re-Equip Long-Distance Network

Amtrak has announced that 10 manufacturers have submitted their ideas on replacement railcars for such overnight routes as Auto Train, California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder and Southwest Chief, marking the “first formal step to completely reequip the Amtrak Long-Distance Network that provides vital service on 14 overnight routes from coast to coast,” the railroad reported Jan. 19.

BNSF: $2.85B to Maintain Core Network and Related Assets

BNSF Railway (BNSF) on Jan. 19 announced its $3.96 billion 2023 capital plan, of which $2.85 billion will be devoted to maintaining the Class I’s core network and related assets.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) handles nearly six million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2022. Also, the Port of Virginia reports having processed more than 3.7 million TEUs in 2022; and CHS Inc. and Cargill will expand TEMCO LLC operations to include the Texas Gulf.

MxV Rail’s SERTC Returns to In-Person Training

The Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) at MxV Rail, formerly the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), has returned to in-person training for first responders around the world, MxV Rail, a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) announced Jan. 16.
