UP Acquiring 20 Battery-Electrics for Yard Service

Union Pacific on Jan. 28 reported ordering 10 battery-electric locomotives apiece from Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company, and Wabtec Corp. for yard testing; the “green” units plus yard infrastructure upgrades will exceed $100 million and support the Class I railroad’s efforts to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

BHP Group Orders Battery-Electric Locomotives From Wabtec

This is the third order to be placed by an Australian freight company for battery-electric locomotives.

Rio Tinto’s order is for the newest version of Wabtec’s FLXdrive battery-electric unit, which features an energy capacity of 7 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Wabtec Lands FLXdrive Order From Australian Mining Company (Updated)

Four FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives from Wabtec will begin tests runs in 2024 along Rio Tinto’s western Australian rail network, the mining company reported on Jan. 10.

MASU’s railway composite brake blocks and disc pads are said to meet UIC and AAR standards for all types of rail transit rolling stock.

Wabtec Acquires India-Based Rail Friction Business

Wabtec Corp. is growing its brakes product portfolio with the addition of New Delhi, India-based MASU’s railway friction business; the deal is valued at approximately $34 million.

Brazilian mining company VALE S.A. has selected ENSCO Rail for track inspection systems and software. In addition, New York Air Brake (NYAB) has earned TTX Company’s SECO (Supplier Evaluation Committee) Award; and Wabtec Corp.’s locomotive plant in Marhowrah, Bihar has received an award for its learning and skill development program.

Ballard Power Systems has acquired Arcola Energy for $40 million. In addition, Harting has earned a product innovation award for its har-modular® series; Navis has recognized six customers with 2021 Inspire Awards; Siemens Mobility and RazorSecure have teamed to provide enhanced rail cybersecurity monitoring solutions; and Wabtec Corp. has published a 2021 Sustainability Report.

CN Orders Wabtec FLXdrive (Updated)

CN is buying a Wabtec FLXdrive battery-electric locomotive for use on the Bessemer & Lake Erie (B&LE) portion of its network in Pennsylvania.
