Safe Rail Transport of Chemicals Requires the Utmost Preparedness

The rail accident that occurred Feb. 3 in East Palestine, Ohio, has generated significant interest, curiosity and concern about hazardous materials being transported by rail. Our company, Union Pacific (UP), and all carriers and producers of hazardous materials are reflecting on how well they’re prepared to respond if a similar situation occurs.

Wabtec: ‘Strong’ 4Q22 Results, Full-Year Backlog Grows

Wabtec “finished a strong 2022 as evidenced by higher sales, margin expansion and increased earnings,” said President and CEO Rafael Santana, who noted during a Feb. 15 earnings report that the company was able to deliver “despite a volatile environment that included significant headwinds from the impact of Russia sanctions, negative foreign currency exchange, supply chain constraints and higher input costs.”

Amtrak Eyes STB Investigation Into ‘Substandard’ Sunset Limited Service

Amtrak in December called on the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to initiate an investigation into “substandard” customer on-time performance for Sunset Limited service between Louisiana and California. Host freight railroad Union Pacific (UP)—which Amtrak said will likely be the prime focus of the investigation—asked the STB on Jan. 27 to order mediation for Amtrak, UP and the other host railroads involved “to resolve or narrow the issues in dispute.”
