UP supporting National Park Foundation programs

Union Pacific, a National Park Foundation (NPF) premier partner for the Find Your Park/Encuentra Tu Parque movement, helps support the Open OutDoors for Kids program, which is providing 132 national parks with grants totaling $2.3 million “to connect young people to national parks through meaningful, educational and engaging activities, and encourage kids to build lifelong connections to these special places.”

STB to UP: Keep us informed

Union Pacific’s plan to implement Precision Scheduled Railroading caught the attention of the Surface Transportation Board, which on Sept. 20 sent a letter signed by Chairman Ann Begeman and Vice Chairman Deb Miller to UP chief executive Lance Fritz requesting that the railroad’s senior management engage in weekly calls with the Board’s Rail Customer and Public Assistance office during the implementation process. The purpose of the calls is “to keep the agency fully informed of UP’s operating changes and impacts to customers and others.”

UP: More like CSX?

Union Pacific late on Sep. 17 (following Wall Street close of business) announced a new operating plan, “Unified Plan 2020,” that “implements Precision Scheduled Railroading principles” that were deployed over the past 20-odd years at, in order, Illinois Central, CN, Canadian Pacific and CSX by the late E. Hunter Harrison.

For UP, 1,000 (or more) new reefers

Union Pacific will be acquiring 1,000 new high-tech refrigerated boxcars and may increase that number to 1,600, if needed, according to UP Vice President and General Manager Agricultural Products Marketing Brad Thrasher.

CSX overhauling intermodal; UP customers affected

The peak season for intermodal traffic is fast approaching, and CSX in late July announced numerous changes to interline service, in particular, those affecting Union Pacific customers with eastbound shipments. The changes are in effect as of Sept. 17, 2018.
