Transit Briefs: UTA, TransLink, SEPTA, CTDOT

Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) FrontRunner commuter rail service may expand from Provo to Payson. In addition, metro Vancouver’s TransLink has released the first full draft of Transport 2050, the region’s 30-year transportation strategy; Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has selected Huitt-Zollars, Inc. for an 18-month study to create a regional rail network plan; and Connecticut will evaluate Aira, a service providing public transit assistance to individuals who are blind or have low vision.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in Texas has been named a Forbes “Best in State Employer.” In addition, Metrolinx’s recent pilot in Ontario that tested transit surfaces for the SARS-CoV-2 virus has received an “all clear” from experts; the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has earned an award from the Canadian Urban Transit Association; and Vancouver’s TransLink is beginning a system-wide rollout of free Wi-Fi for customers.

Metro-Vancouver’s TransLink is offering fare card rebates to riders who scrap their older fossil fuel-powered cars and trucks. In addition, MTA Metro-North Railroad on Oct. 4 celebrated the completion of its ADA-compliant Port Jervis Station in New York; and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Board has approved measures to add more social outreach workers.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has awarded ICF a contract for up to $30 million to provide environmental services for Link21. In addition, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and Vancouver’s TransLink are installing antimicrobial copper coatings on high-touch vehicle services as part of a pilot; and the Southern Rail Commission (SRC) will award federal grants to four cities for passenger rail station upgrades in anticipation of Amtrak’s Gulf Coast service restoration.

Vancouver’s TransLink has begun construction on the new C$52 million Capstan Station, to serve SkyTrain’s Canada Line. In addition, California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) on Sept. 4 resumed light rail service on the Blue Line, just days after restoring full Orange Line and partial Green Line service.

Canada, TransLink Investing C$290MM in SkyTrain Projects

Infrastructure Canada has reported that the government of Canada and Vancouver’s TransLink have committed C$236.7 million (US$188.49 million) to build additional SkyTrain maintenance facilities; the government will also invest C$53 million (US$ 42.2 million) to upgrade SkyTrain’s Burrard Station on the Expo Line and to expand Expo and Millennium line stations to support larger five-car, 85-meter (276-foot) trains.

Transit Briefs: NJ Transit, TransLink, WMATA

New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) is advancing its Transit Oriented Development (TOD) project at Metropark Station in Woodbridge; TransLink, Vancouver, will begin upgrading the Burrard SkyTrain Station on the Expo Line in early 2022; and Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will expand rail service to midnight, seven days per week, starting July 18.

Vancouver SkyTrain Extension to Receive C$1.3B

The Canadian government will provide up to C$1.3 billion (US$1.04 billion) for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension, a more than C$3 billion (US$2.4 billion) project to expand metro Vancouver’s Expo Line 16 kilometers (9.94 miles).

Business automation software developer Ivrnet Inc. has renewed its contract with TransLink, Vancouver, for the NexText digital communications and mobile advertising platform.
