STB backs CHSRA second segment

The Surface Transportation Board has ruled that the California High-Speed Rail Authority “is authorized to construct a 114-mile high-speed passenger rail line between Fresno and Bakersfield, Cal., subject to environmental mitigation conditions,” thus giving the state’s high speed rail effort more momentum.

STB sets 2013 railroad cost of capital at 11.32%

The Surface Transportation Board on July 31, 2014 issued its decision calculating the railroad industry’s after-tax cost of capital for 2013 as 11.32%, a slight increase over 2012’s 11.12%. The cost-of-capital figure represents STB’s estimate of the average rate of return needed to persuade investors to provide capital to the freight rail industry, and is used to determine if railroads are revenue-adequate.

Class I employment rises in June

Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show total Class I railroad employment as of mid-June 2014 rose 1.02%, to 166,139, from June 2013, and also gained modestly previous month, up 0.03%.

Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroad employment rose 0.31% in mid-April 2014, measured against a year earlier, and also advanced 0.81% from mid-March levels.
