The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) approves its Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 and FY 2026 operating and capital budgets. Also, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) new tap-to-pay fare payment system is now available at all PATH stations in New Jersey; the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) releases its 2023 Annual Report; and Amtrak issues two Requests for Information (RFIs) to support high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity along the Northeast Corridor (NEC).

Thales Canada Lands STM CBTC Contract

Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) has awarded Thales Canada a contract for a CBTC (communications-based train control) system for the Montreal Métro Blue Line. Thales’ SelTrac™ G8 technology—the first CBTC system

Transit Briefs: SacRT, TTC, Phoenix Valley Metro, Colorado General Assembly

Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) in California is exercising an option with Siemens Mobility for more LRVs (light rail vehicles). Also, Canada’s three biggest transit agencies, including the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), are urging the federal government to advance the next wave of transit funding; Valley Metro in Phoenix, Ariz., is installing new fare machines; and the Colorado General Assembly aims to leverage millions in federal infrastructure funding to bring passenger rail service to the state.

STM Awards Contract for Blue Line Extension Train Control System

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) on Feb. 13 announced that its Blue Line Extension office has awarded a C$217,173,941 contract to Ground Transportation Systems Canada Inc. for the line’s new communications-based train control (CBTC) system. The contract includes installation, maintenance and certain options for the CBTC system.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) launches the Office of Customer Experience. Also, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) capital repairs are slated to cost $43 billion over five years; Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is cutting operating budget costs in 2024 due to a shortfall; and an amended Full Funding Grant Agreement has been signed for Honolulu’s Skyline.

19 CUTA Members Earn Public Transit Awards

The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) earlier this month presented 19 organizations and individuals with Public Transit Awards for demonstrating “the greatest impact within the communities they serve.”

The new opening date for Eglinton Crosstown LRT—the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) future Line 5—won’t be announced until the “high-risk testing phase” is completed.
