Transit Briefs: NYMTA, SkyTrain, KC Streetcar

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announces major congestion pricing-funded subway improvement projects moving forward. Also, Canada and TransLink invest in traction power upgrades across Metro Vancouver’s SkyTrain network; and KC Streetcar’s Riverfront Extension officially enters the testing phase.

Amtrak’s Airo fleet moves toward debut. Also, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) pays tribute to Boston in the 1970s with a refurbished retro locomotive; and a historic SkyTrain car from TransLink’s retiring Mark I fleet is repurposed for BC film studio.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) wraps up its track improvement program. Also, the new Capstan SkyTrain Station on the Canada Line in Richmond, British Columbia, is open.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is boosting weekend service and ordering new ticket vending machines. Also, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is restoring Muni service to the L Taraval line after a five-year improvement project; TransLink is upgrading SkyTrain’s Oakridge–41st Avenue Station in Vancouver; and free public Wi-Fi is ending at Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway stations.

The 2.4-mile DC Streetcar, which launched its first phase in 2015 and second phase in 2016, runs free, daily trips along the H Street NE Corridor and Benning Road from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue. The District Department of Transportation (Washington, D.C.) extends Jacobs’ program management contract for the DC Streetcar. Also, Forbes ranks New Jersey Transit (NJT) as a “best employer”; Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) provides free Transit app upgrade to public transportation riders statewide; metro Vancouver’s TransLink launches a fare enforcement program; and Memphis (Tenn.) Area Transit Authority (MATA) suspends trolley service.

For SkyTrain, Another Six Trainsets on Order

Alstom on May 28 reported landing an approximately C$123 million contract from British Columbia’s TransLink for an additional six five-car Mark V trainsets, which will run on the SkyTrain automated rapid transit system in metro Vancouver. The contract was booked in the 2023/24 fiscal year, according to the manufacturer.
