Transit Briefs: Denver RTD, Skyline, LA Metro

The Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) introduces Tap-n-Ride for convenient fare payment on the go. Also, ridership on the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s (HART) Skyline is still up one month after the second segment opens; and registrations for LA Metro’s LIFE and GoPass exceed one million.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) readies for Silver Line service. Also, Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) preps riders for Skyline’s second-segment launch; California’s Caltrain will be compensated for the power it returns to the grid through its trains’ regenerative braking; San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) reports a drop in crime across its network; Virginia Railway Express (VRE) reaches a ridership milestone; and a third daily trip will be added to Amtrak’s Missouri River Runner during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) implements new security measures to strengthen public safety. Also, Skyline stations may start lending books via vending machines; NJ Transit celebrates railroad history with “Meet Our Rail Fleet” event; and LA Metro releases an industry playbook to help transit agencies deliver world-class service for major sports and entertainment events.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) selects FlatironDragados to build two key rail projects. Also, Segment 2 trial operations are under way for Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s (HART) Skyline project; installation of new Commuter Rail fare gates is starting at Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) South Station; and Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon’s (TriMet) Transit Police Division welcomes back the Portland Police Bureau.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) seeks the public’s input on proposed 2026 less-than-inflation fare increase. Also, Valley Metro begins two-line rail system testing in downtown Phoenix to prepare for the opening of the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub; the Honolulu City Auditor releases a new audit on Skyline; and VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) launches a locomotive engineer program in northern Manitoba.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) will temporarily shut down Skyline to accommodate testing of the autonomous rail system’s second operating segment. Also, NC By Train—North Carolina-supported Amtrak service—achieved record ridership in 2024, the third year in a row.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) launches the Office of Customer Experience. Also, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) capital repairs are slated to cost $43 billion over five years; Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is cutting operating budget costs in 2024 due to a shortfall; and an amended Full Funding Grant Agreement has been signed for Honolulu’s Skyline.
