RailAmerica carloads up in August

RailAmerica, Inc. has reported 74,813 total freight carloads for ended August, up 2.9% from 72,697 in August 2011.

Regional Rail acquires Diamondback Signal

Kennett Square, Pa.-based Regional Rail, LLC said Friday it has acquired a majority ownership interest in Diamondback Signal, LLC. The latter specializes in the design, construction, and maintenance of signal installations for railroad/highway crossings, and was formed in January of this year.

Rail Link gets Wyoming safety/health award

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. said Wednesday subsidiary Rail Link, Inc. has received the Wyoming Governor’s Award for Safety and Health in the Large Mine-Site Contractor category for the second consecutive year.

Norfolk Southern shows the way for short lines

Norfolk Southern’s 30th Anniversary Year was helped along by a blow-out Annual Short Line meeting in Roanoke, Va. More than 200 members of the short line community attended, representing most of the 250 short lines that have direct connections with NS, along with another 140 NS names, including President and CEO Wick Moorman, Chief Operating Officer Mark Manion, and Chief Commercial Officer Don Seale. And I came away feeling a change in the air.

GWI plans rail line in Labrador Trough

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and a new subsidiary, KeRail Inc., have entered into an agreement with Tata Steel Minerals Canada Ltd. (TSMC) for KeRail to provide transportation for the 4.2 million tons of iron ore TSMC expects to ship annually from a mine it is developing near Schefferville, Quebec in the Labrador Trough. As part of the agreement, KeRail will construct an approximately 21-km (13..6- mile) rail line that will connect TSMC’s mine to the Tshiuetin Rail Transportation (TSH) interchange point in Schefferville.

GWI Australia buys key freight terminal

Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming Inc. announced Wednesday that subsidiary Genesee & Wyoming Australia Pty Ltd. (GWA) purchased an intermodal and freight terminal in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, from Asciano Services Pty Ltd. (AIO). As part of the transaction GWA is selling AIO a fuel sales business and other assets in the township of Cook, South Australia.

STB keeps rate-case fees low

The Surface Transportation Board’s latest update of fees shippers must pay to file cases and pleadings, released Friday, contains some increases but leaves unchanged the current $350 fee charged shippers to file a rate complaint, as well as the current $150 fee to file an expedited small rate case. The board reduced both fees last year.
