Providence and Worcester shareholders approve GWI acquisition

Shareholders of Providence and Worcester Railroad Company (P&W) voted to approve the proposed acquisition of PWRR by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI).

AAR: weekly intermodal volume up 2.6%

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) on Oct. 26 reported for the week ending Oct. 22, 2016, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 544,092 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.7% compared with the same week last year.

Road & Rail Services marks 30 years

BNSF Short Line of the Year: Burlington Junction

BNSF Railway on Oct. 20 named Burlington Junction Railway (BJRY) its 2016 Short Line of the Year at its annual Short Line Conference. BNSF recognized BJRY “for its dedication to promoting safety initiatives, customer relationships and growth opportunities. Since the formation of BJRY in 1985, the railroad has not had a single FRA reportable injury.”

Genesee & Wyoming developments into Australia

Genesee & Wyoming’s Australia (GWA) subsidiary has entered into agreements to acquire Glencore Rail (GRail) for $A 1.14bn ($US 870m) and will also issue a 49% equity stake in GWA to funds managed by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (Mira).

“Civil War-era” technology? You’re joking, right?

I’ve heard some pretty disingenuous (that’s a polite word for “dopey”) things said about railroads in my nearly 25 years at Railway Age. Nearly all of them have come from uninformed generalist reporters who are mostly clueless about what we do, how we do it, and the technology we employ—and that they don’t take the time to understand.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on Oct. 19 that for the week ending October 15, 2016, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 531,936 carloads and intermodal units, down 4.2% compared with the same week last year.

BMC acquires transload facility from Di-Corp

Badger Mining Corporation (BMC), a family-owned industrial sand supplier based out of Berlin, Wis., announced Oct. 14 a further commitment to the Canadian market with the asset acquisition of Di-Corp’s state-of-the-art transload facility in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, located 12 miles north of Grand Prairie, Alta.

OmniTRAX, Arrows Up form joint venture

OmniTRAX Sand Holdings LLC, an affiliate of OmniTRAX, Inc., is entering into a joint venture with Elk Grove Village, Ill.-based Arrows Up LLC, a provider of bulk storage and transportation services. Terms were not disclosed.
