BART Silicon Valley Phase 2 Project One Step Closer to Funding

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has notified Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) that it intends to obligate funds to advance the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase 2 extension project.

The Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink) will test an Earthquake Early Warning System. In addition, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on Sept. 10 unveiled the reconfigured 42nd Street Shuttle; California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) on Sept. 12 restored complete Blue Line light rail service; and Sound Transit on Sept. 13 kicked off its Fare Ambassador Pilot program.

Vancouver’s TransLink has begun construction on the new C$52 million Capstan Station, to serve SkyTrain’s Canada Line. In addition, California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) on Sept. 4 resumed light rail service on the Blue Line, just days after restoring full Orange Line and partial Green Line service.

California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) on Aug. 29 resumed partial light rail service. In addition, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) on Aug. 30 launched CharmFlex, a discounted three- and 10-day pass for flexible commuter travel.

Miami-Dade County (Fla.) Metrorail has put into service the last two Hitachi railcars from a 136-car order that was awarded in 2012. In addition, California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) may resume light rail service as early as this week, and Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) is moving forward with a northwest commuter rail study.

VTA Service Restoration Date Extended

California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has reported that restoration of light rail service will “likely start later than the end of July, as originally expected.”

Multi-Phase Plan Under Way to Restore VTA Service

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has begun a five-phase plan to restore light rail service by the end of July, but “no firm date can be set at this time,” the California agency reported.

The Edmonton (Alberta) City Council approved municipal funding for the 2.8-mile (4.5-kilometer) Capital Line South LRT Extension. In addition, LACMTA finalized its 2021-24 Coordinated Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Plan; SANDAG and MTS unveiled the VA Medical Center Trolley Station; VTA is slated to receive $20 million from the state of California to help with recovery from the May 26 mass shooting; and TriMet was forced to suspend MAX service due to record-setting temperatures.

Mass Shooting at VTA Rail Yard (UPDATED MAY 29)

The wave of mass shootings that has swept across the United States in the past few years hit the rail industry when, at approximately 6:30 a.m. PDT today (May 26), a gunman opened fire at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light rail vehicle yard and maintenance facility just north of downtown San Jose. There were 10 fatalities and multiple injuries. The gunman, identified as VTA employee Samuel J. Cassidy, is among the dead.
