For 2020, RSI Going Virtual

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) has moved its 2020 education conference online. Now open to all rail industry professionals, RSI 2020 Online Education Sessions will run September 21 through October 2 and feature two to three webinars each weekday.

O’Malley Departing RSI

After just over two years at the helm, Railway Supply Institute (RSI) President Mike O’Malley is leaving the organization at the end of July. O’Malley, who has served as RSI’s leader since early 2018, is “pursuing an opportunity with a corporation outside the Washington, D.C. area,” RSI said in an announcement. O’Malley joined the organization after serving in a government relations capacity with CSX.

RSI Cancels 2020 Expo & Education Conference

In light of the ongoing public health risks surrounding in-person events and the safety of travel as a result of COVID-19, the Railway Supply Institute (RSI) has decided to cancel the 2020 RSI Expo & Education Conference scheduled for Sept. 9-11 in Chicago, Ill.

Railcar Manufacturing Slips in 1Q2020

The Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute (RSI-ARCI) 1Q2020 railcar industry order, delivery, and backlog statistics show that orders in the quarter moderated y/y to 6,172 cars vs. 9,663 in the prior-year quarter and down sequentially from 8,464 cars in 4Q19. The industry delivered 10,824 railcars in the quarter, 26.5% lower than the 14,727 railcars delivered in 4Q19. The backlog now stands at 46,330 railcars, down 9.7% from 4Q19’s 51,295 cars—the lowest backlog figure since 4Q10’s 22,658.

RSI Opens Board Nominations

The Railway Supply Institute announced that it is soliciting individual nominations for three new members of its board of directors, with terms set to begin in January 2021. The typical office term for board members is three years with an opportunity to extend if elected to the board’s executive committee.

RSI Equipment Leasing Committee Names Zander Chairman

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) Equipment Leasing Committee has named TrinityRail Senior Vice President Harry Zander as its new chairman. Zander, a long-time railcar leasing professional, brings 29 years of railcar leasing experience to the role, beginning with Chrysler Capital and including stints at GE Capital, Mitsui and Macquarie.
