ARCI: Freight car market slowing down

First-quarter 2016 freight car reporting statistics from the Railway Supply Institute (RSI) American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee show that car orders are down, and the backlog (cars ordered but not delivered) is decreasing, as are deliveries.

Freight car orders stay strong in 4Q15

The Railway Supply Institute on Jan. 28, 2016 published its railcar industry order, delivery and backlog statistics for fourth-quarter 2015, and overall, the sector looks solid, according to Steve Barger, Managing Director and Equity Research Analyst with KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc.

Freight car backlog grows 75%

The backlog of freight cars grew by about 75% in 2014, according to fourth-quarter reporting statistics compiled by the Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee. As of Dec. 31, 2014, the backlog stood at 142,837 units, compared to 81,927 units at the end of 2014’s first quarter.

Freight car orders in 2014’s first quarter soared about 38% from fourth-quarter 2013, to 24,050 units, pushing builder backlogs up around 12% to 81,927, according to the most recent Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute figures.
