RAILWAY AGE, NOVEMBER 2019 ISSUE: Good things come in threes—and Railway Age’s Women in Rail awards are no exception. In its third year of existence, the 2019 Women in Rail awards are poised to be the most exciting yet. Recognizing vision, ability and leadership, our 12 honorees from freight, transit and supplier companies as well as trade organizations were selected by a panel of judges. They received the nod because they have been—and still are—moving their companies forward while making contributions to the community. In an industry typically dominated by men, these women are getting things done—and their hard work is an example for all.

Our 14 honorees from freight, transit, supplier and trade organizations are driving their businesses forward while helping to make a leadership difference in the industry and community.
Women in Rail 2017 – Jennifer Ryan, North County Transit District
Jennifer Ryan has been a strong voice for technical consistency but also a voice for better passenger access and services. As a former Facilities Engineer in High Tech, she has also been a strong advocate for ‘designing for maintainability’. Her commitment towards bringing others along is shown in her involvement in various STEM programs to support greater diversity in Engineering and Transportation.
Women in Rail 2017 – Corina Moore, Ontario Northland Railway
A native of the region served by Ontario Northland Railway, Moore joined the company in 2005 and worked her way up to Chief Operations Officer, when she helped lead an initiative to transform the company, which was threatened with defunding by the provincial government.
Women in Rail 2017 – Grace Madden, EMD Progress Rail
Working in noise and vibration for EMD Progress Rail – what can generously be termed among the most complex and difficult fields in engineering – Grace Madden has worked tirelessly with exceptional skill and precision to lead her team and department at one of the storied brands in railroading.
Women in Rail 2017 – Sharon Greene, HDR
Sharon Greene of HDR has been at the forefront of innovation in rail transportation finance and infrastructure development for more than 40 years. Specializing in transportation economics, infrastructure finance and transportation planning, she has developed innovative financial strategies for rail and transit organizations and managed programs for transit, intercity and commuter rail, as well as freight and goods movement.
Women in Rail 2017 – Allison Fergus, Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc.
Fergus joined Genesee & Wyoming in 2005 and not long after was named one of the youngest female General Counsels in the history of the U.S. rail industry.
Women in Rail 2017 – Joy Chiu, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey/PATH
As Assistant Superintendent – Way & Structures, Chiu developed and built the team for Port Authority Trans-Hudson’s (PATH’s) newest unit, Logistics and Rail Planning, which is responsible for coordination of the different capital projects at PATH; providing executive management with key information for decision-making, and managing staff who oversee the coordination of the major real estate development projects around PATH.
