The 87th St./Woodruff Station on the Metra Electric commuter rail line in Chicago opens next month after a two-year rehab. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) opens a new North Wilmington Station. Also, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) PATH commuter rail system records its second-busiest month since the pandemic; and the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board votes to join other transit officials in exploring the feasibility of Front Range Passenger Rail.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) reports agency volumes for April 2025. Also, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) selects a developer for its life sciences-anchored mixed-use development at North Bethesda and launches a new, faster, and easier way to pay fares; and Alstom is selected to deliver additional Automated People Movers (APMs) to Denver International Airport.

NYC Transit Tech Lab Announces 2025 Project Partners

The New York City Transit Tech Lab, a joint initiative of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Partnership Fund for New York City, has selected 12 companies to collaborate with regional transit agencies for eight-week proof-of-concept tests of technologies designed to “optimize transit schedules, communications, inspections, and maintenance.” In addition to the MTA, the agencies include the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ), NJ Transit and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT).

An Ambassador of Change for Women at PATH

On Patrice Polite’s first day at PATH in 2009, two things stood out. The first was just how nervous she felt when she reported for duty to the car equipment division facility in Harrison. The second was how few women she ran across during Day One – only one other, in fact. That one woman showed her the ropes and helped navigate her new surroundings.

TTL Selects 13 Companies to Continue Partnering With Transit Agencies

The Transit Tech Lab (TTL) on Feb. 10 announced that the 13 companies selected to participate in last year’s program will continue to work with regional transportation agency partners in larger-scale pilots to “demonstrate how their technology can improve transportation and deliver essential services more effectively.”

Also, PATH delivers 70% of pre-pandemic annual ridership; crime on Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) drops 17% compared with last year; and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro proposes to send nearly $300 million to public transit agencies as he works to “stave off cutbacks” by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA).
