AAR “anxious” for Trump’s STB shift

Regarding the Association of American Railroads Nov. 17 request that the U.S. Surface Transportation Board delay regulatory proposals until the U.S. Senate confirms a full slate of Board members appointed by President-elect Donald J. Trump,  waiting until all STB vacant seats are filled could stall any further STB rulemakings until summer 2017 or later.

Madness in Mosier

You want to double or triple your train throughput? Just build a nice long siding. At least that’s what Friends of the Columbia Gorge would like the Wasco County (Wash.) Board of County Commissioners to believe.

STB’s tempest in transparency

Pity economic regulators. The more they seek the middle-of-the-road, the greater risk both sides assail them. Economist Sidney L. Miller wrote, “It seems clear that our railways are regulated well, rather than wisely.”

My gas tax is going up—finally!

Only one day after the tragic wreck of a New Jersey Transit commuter train at Hoboken Terminal came some positive news about transportation in the state, specifically, how it’s funded. Unfortunately, the news got lost in the media circus surrounding the accident, and went mostly unnoticed. But as I think you’ll see, this development should have a positive effect on safety, in the long-term.
