Judge Paul L. Friedman of the U. S. District Court for the District of Columbia has granted class certification to a lawsuit in which eight shippers allege that BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and CSX Transportation conspired to fix the price of fuel surcharges.

There’s no question about the importance of coal to the railroads. It has recently accounted for 44% of U.S. Class I railroad tonnage, 24.1% of carloads, and 24.2% of revenue. Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line Extension (BLE) light rail project along the North Carolina Railroad corridor moved a big step forward Wednesday with the announcement that the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR), the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), and Norfolk Southern Corp. had signed lease, construction, and operating agreements for the 2.7-mile addition to the light rail line.
