Pan Am Southern, Pan Am Railways take MBTA to task over PTC

Pan Am Southern LLC (PAS, the joint venture of Pan Am Railways and Norfolk Southern) and Pan Am Railways (PAR) itself on Dec. 20 served default and dispute notices concerning “important operational safety agreements” with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) involving Positive Train Control (PTC).

First freight rail shipment at North Carolina Industrial Center

Representatives from Cambro Manufacturing, the North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR) the Alamance Chamber of Commerce, as well as Alamance County and the City of Mebane, gathered Dec. 17 for the completion of a lead track at the North Carolina Industrial Center (NCIC) and the first freight rail shipment received by the manufacturer of food service equipment.

NS safety train completes 18-city tour

Norfolk Southern announced its safety train recently completed its 2016 tour, training 1,926 first responders in 18 cities in 13 states across NS’ rail network. With rolling classrooms and hands-on activities, the safety train provided free training to firefighters, police officers, emergency management personnel, and other first responders regarding rail-related hazardous materials incidents.

NS safety train to Slidell, La.

Norfolk Southern Corporation’s safety train rolled into Slidell, La., last week.  NS says it hosted 143 area emergency responders who received advanced training in safely handling potential rail incidents involving hazardous materials.

NS’s McDaniel receives environmental excellence award

The Association of American Railroads on Nov. 2 awarded the 2016 Professional Environmental Excellence Award, described as “the highest honor for environmental professionals in the railroad industry,” to Russ McDaniel, Director of Environmental Engineering, Remediation and Compliance, Norfolk Southern.

NS 3Q: Record-low OR

Norfolk Southern on Oct. 26 reported third-quarter 2016 results with a record low operating ratio, which improved to 67.5%, reflecting a 10% reduction in operating expenses coupled with a 7% decline in operating revenues.
