Intermodal outpaces weekly carloads

The Association of American Railroads said U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 10 was 519,545 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.6% from the same week a year ago.

OmniTRAX Savannah hub certified GRAD

OmniTRAX Inc.’s Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub has been certified a GRAD (Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development) site by the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), the state’s marketing and sales arm. OmniTRAX is developing the 2,700-acre tract in Effingham County, Ga., in partnership with the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority (ECIDA).

Norfolk Southern powers 4Q income

Norfolk Southern said net income for the fourth quarter totaled $3.97 million and earnings per share were $13.79, thanks to federal tax cuts that added $3.48 billion to the bottom line. For the year, net income was $5.4 billion with earnings per share of $18.61, which added $12.10 for the quarter and $12 for the year on the tax reform legislation.

Petroleum pumped but carloads weaker

Petroleum and related products were one of the few gainers as the Association of American Railroads reported U.S. weekly rail traffic was 508,239 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.9% from the same week a year ago.

Comms union, carmen ratify contract

Members of the Transportation Communications International Union (TCU) and Brotherhood Railway Carmen (BRC) have ratified new contract terms with the nation’s major freight railroads covering more than 17,000 employees.



Record containers and rail moves for South Carolina

Container volume grew 9% in 2017 for the South Carolina Ports Authority, with a record-setting 2.2 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEU) handled during the year.

AAR: 2017 intermodal record

Total U.S. rail traffic was 397,032 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Dec. 30, down 6.8% compared with the same week in 2016, according to the Association of American Railroads.
