NS Requiring COVID-19 Vaccinations for All Employees (UPDATED)

Norfolk Southern (NS) on Oct. 20 notified all employees that it will require them to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by Dec. 8; on Oct. 22, the railroad filed suit to block its unions from suing and its employees from striking over the mandate; now, the unions have countersued.

BLET, SMART-TD Seek Injunctions Against NS

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and the SMART Transportation Division (SMART–TD) have each filed Motions for Preliminary Injunctions against Norfolk Southern in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, “to stop the railroad from forcing locomotive engineers to work as conductors, and for disciplining those who don’t.”

Four Railroaders Earn Environmental Achievement Awards (UPDATED)

Railroad Environmental Conference organizers recognized Norfolk Southern’s Josh Raglin, Union Pacific’s Christi Hornick and Association of American Railroads’ Robert Fronczak with Career Environmental Achievement awards, and NS’ Robert Scoble with the Professional Environmental Excellence Award at their 2021 virtual event, held Oct. 26-27.

Norfolk Southern (NS) and Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company, have teamed on the first GP34ECO locomotive for yard and intermediate service; it is now undergoing testing to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions certification requirements, the companies reported on Sept. 30.
