Paint schemes highlight NS historical heritage

Norfolk Southern said Thursday it is honoring its predecessor railroads during 2012, its 30th anniversary year, by painting 18 new locomotives in commemorative schemes that reflect the heritage of those predecessors.

Norfolk Southern names Graab VP Mechanical

Norfolk Southern Corp. has named Donald D. Graab vice president mechanical, headquartered in Atlanta, effective March 1. Graab succeeds Tim A. Heilig, who retires after 41 years with Norfolk Southern.

NS nixes Charlotte commuter line plan

Norfolk Southern says it cannot support a current plan for commuter rail service linking Charlotte and Mt. Mourne, N.C., calling the idea “fatally flawed.”

NS earnings, revenue records topple

Norfolk Southern late Tuesday reported a series of significant records for 2011: Railway operating revenues reached $11.2 billion, up 17%; income from railway operations climbed 20% to $3.2 billion; net income was $1.9 billion, up 28%; and diluted earnings per share increased 36% to $5.45.

New bridge eyed for NS Southern Tier

Growing freight traffic potential, spurred on by energy production activity in the Marcellus Shale formation in western New York State and Pennsylvania, is encouraging Norfolk Southern to replace a historic bridge on NS’s Southern Tier route linking Buffalo and Binghamton, N.Y., and spanning the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park, near Castile, N.Y.

Virginia: Amtrak to Norfolk an added service

Virginia’s plans to expand Amtrak passenger rail service to Norfolk, Va., will be pursued without sacrificing Amtrak’s current route through the state’s Tidewater region, which terminates at Newport News, on the north side of the James River.
