GWI leases Alabama short line from NS

Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming’s newly formed subsidiary, the Columbus & Chattahoochee Railroad, Inc. (CCR), has signed an agreement with Norfolk Southern to lease and operate a 26-mile segment of NS track in Alabama.

Axion Power gets NS order for batteries

Axion Power International Inc. said Thursday it has received an order from Norfolk Southern Corp. for lead-carbon (PbC) batteries for use in a battery-powered locomotive.

NS: “Another record-breaking quarter”

Norfolk Southern late Tuesday reported net income of $410 million ($1.23 per 
diluted share), up 26% from the first quarter of 2011. This included 
 a $58 million non-cash charge that reduced net income by $36
 million, or $0.10 per diluted share.



Norfolk Southern honored for carbon reduction

The American Carbon Registry has presented Norfolk Southern its Corporate Excellence award for “making a public commitment to reducing CO2 emissions 10% below 2009 levels by 2014 and for reaching nearly 40%t of that five-year goal in the first year,” the railroad announced Tuesday.

NS plans yard expansion in Ohio

Norfolk Southern announced that it will begin a $160 million expansion of its Bellevue rail yard in northern Ohio this month, doubling the yard’s capacity.

STB: Michigan files to acquire NS line

The Surface Transportation Board says Michigan’s Department of Transportation has filed an Acquisition Exemption, requesting permission for MichDOT to acquire two sections of NS rights-of-way totaling about 135 miles.

NS, MichDOT, Amtrak resolve slow-order spat

Michigan’s Department of Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp., and Amtrak reportedly have reached agreement on work designed to remove or reduce slow orders NS imposed last month on right-of-way between Kalamazoo, and Dearborn, Mich., the latter city just west of Detroit.

NS “Train Your Brain” safety campaign hits Alabama

Now in its sixth year, Norfolk Southern’s “Train Your Brain” public safety program has reminded more than half a million people “to be smart and alert around highway-rail grade crossings and to avoid trespassing on railroad property,” the railroad notes.

Amtrak, Michigan cry foul over NS slow order

Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation late Thursday publicly protested a decision by Norfolk Southern enacting speed restrictions of 25 to 30 mph on NS track between Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. The decisions slow Amtrak Wolverine Service trains linking Chicago and Detroit from previous speeds of 79 mph; Amtrak advised passengers to expect delays of 45 to 90 minutes more than scheduled running times.
