The long-awaited, long-overdue extension of MTA New York City Transit’s extension of the No. 7 subway line to Manhattan’s far west side opened to the public on Sept. 13, 2015. It is the first new line on New York’s system in 20 years.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded Siemens Industry Inc. and Thales Transport & Security two 67-month contracts worth a total of $205.8 million to install communications-based train control (CBTC) on a portion of the New York City Transit (NYCT) Queens Boulevard Line (QBL).
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast has named MTA Bridges and Tunnels President James Ferrara as interim president of MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) effective Aug. 21, when NYCT President Carmen Bianco retires. Ferrara will serve as interim president until Bianco’s permanent replacement is named.
As a result of work completed in March 2014 in response to the Federal Railroad Administration’s Emergency Order 29, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North say they are in compliance with the recommendations made recently to all U.S. passenger railroads in FRA Safety Advisory 2015-03.
MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco has announced his retirement, effective Aug. 1, 2015. In his time as president, Bianco “transformed the agency’s organizational culture to align management strategies, enhance safety and improve customer service,” the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority noted.
