The first trainset of R211A/S (traditional closed-end) cars to operate on the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) B Line enters service. Also, Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) releases its inaugural customer experience action plan.

Construction is under way at the Timmins-Porcupine Station in Ontario, Canada, part of the Northlander passenger-rail revival project. Also, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) posts ridership, performance and safety improvements in first-half 2025; and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) recognizes two members’ outstanding sustainability achievements.

NYMTA Approves Purchase of 316 M-9A Passenger Railcars

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on June 23 announced that its Finance Committee has approved the purchase of 316 M-9A railcars. This includes 160 cars to be allocated to the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) fleet and 156 for Metro-North Railroad (MNR).

MTA: Ridership Up, Fare Evasion Down

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on April 28 presented a progress report to the MTA operating committees on fare collection across the subway and on buses and commuter railroads, and toll collection on bridges and tunnels.

Also, Tri-Rail ridership continues to show signs of growth in 2025; the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launches an initiative to protect the Metro-North Hudson Line against effects of climate change; the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC) threatens not to approve the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) plan to expand automation; and new faregates are off to a strong start at LA Metro’s Lake and Firestone stations.

NYMTA: February CRZ Tolling ‘In Line With Projections’; C&D Department Reports $3B Saved in First Five Years

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on March 24 announced that from Feb. 1 through Feb. 28, tolls from the Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ) generated $51.9 million in revenue with a net after expenses of $40.4 million. This, the agency says, “keeps the program on track to provide the $500 million that was initially projected.” The MTA will continue to report revenues from this program monthly.
