Transit Briefs: TransLink, Metrolinx, Caltrain, NYMTA, Sound Transit

TransLink receives more than C$663 million in transit funding through the Canada Public Transit Fund to improve Metro Vancouver’s public transit infrastructure. Also, Metrolinx’s Hazel McCallion Line extension will bring underground rapid transit to Brampton’s downtown core; the end of 2024 shows growing Caltrain ridership; the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) releases the results of its Fall 2024 Customers Count Survey; and Sound Transit adopts the name Pinehurst Station for the NE 130th Infill Station Project.

NYMTA Exercising 435-car R211 Option

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is exercising Option 2 with Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. for 435 additional R211 rapid transit railcars—355 R211A/S (traditional closed-end) cars and 80 R211T open-gangway cars.

Crichlow Tapped as 12th NYCT President

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber on Oct. 23 named three officials to senior strategic roles, including Demetrius Crichlow as the 12th permanent President of New York City Transit (NYCT).

Amtrak is seeking four CRISI grants: $13.4 million to replace catenary between North Brunswick and Newark; $18.6 million to upgrade signal systems between New Brunswick and Elizabeth; $80.277 million to replace electrical substation 41 in Kearny; and $187.5 million to replace the Sawtooth Bridges in Kearny (pictured), according to NJ.com. Amtrak applies for federal state-of-good-repair grants to improve service on the Northeast Corridor. Also, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) in North Carolina launches a Rail Vehicle Maintenance Apprenticeship program; Denver, Colo., Regional Transportation District (RTD) meets all the state of Colorado’s financial health ratios; and New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) holds a groundbreaking in Brooklyn for a subway station accessibility project.

Crichlow Appointed NYCT Interim President

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber on May 29 appointed Demetrius Crichlow as Interim President of MTA New York City Transit (NYCT), effective June 14.

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NYMTA) unveils its Climate Resiliency Roadmap. Also, Washington’s Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) earns a sustainability award for its Federal Way Link light rail extension; metro-Vancouver’s TransLink approves a 2024 investment plan to address overcrowding; and the final sections of Mexico’s Tren Maya project are expected to be completed in August.

New Jersey Transit (NJT) celebrates Black History Month with specially wrapped buses and commuter rail locomotive. Also, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) advances its no-standing zone pilot program to protect subway conductors; San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) will reassess route options for the Airport Transit Connection project; and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) says investments in new frontline staff are improving customer satisfaction and safety.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launches OMNY on Hudson Rail Link, releases the results of the Fall 2023 Customers Count Survey, and receives approval to time delay emergency exits to fight fare evasion. Also, New Jersey state lawmakers advance a bill to establish an office representing customers’ interest following a proposed 15% fare hike by NJ Transit; and a new study predicts the significant economic impact of passenger rail in Ohio.

Eight new station names are announced for TransLink’s Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension. Also, a section of Calgary Transit’s LRT Red Line reopens following a nine-day closure; the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) explores the market for passenger train cars and locomotives; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) installs five new test turnstiles for a new fare payment system; and the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announces the installation of wide-aisle fare gates and a new customer service center at Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue-JFK Airport Station.
