MTA Transit Tech Lab Seeks Submissions

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Partnership for New York City announced the second round of the Transit Tech Lab, described as “an accelerator program that allows the MTA and other public transportation agencies to explore innovative, private sector solutions to problems they face in operating the region’s subway, bus and commuter rail services.”

New York MTA: $51.5 billion Capex Plan

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on Sept. 16 released a proposed $51.5 billion 2020-2024 capital investment plan it describes as “by far the highest in the MTA’s history, increasing spending on infrastructure by 70% over current levels.” MTA plans to invest more than $40 billion in New York City Transit subways and buses as well as make major investments in the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuter rail networks.

New York MTA launches OMNY pilot

More than 25 years after it began transitioning its fare payment system from traditional metal tokens to the MetroCard, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched OMNY, its new contactless smartcard system, with a pilot program on the New York City Transit (NYCT) Lexington Avenue (4-5-6) subway and buses on Staten Island. The public pilot kicked off May 31 at the Bowling Green station in Lower Manhattan.

No shutdown for NYCT L Train

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has halted plans for a complete shutdown of MTA New York City Transit “L” Train service through the storm-damaged Canarsie Tunnel. Cuomo announced his decision in a press conference during which engineering academics said that tunnel repairs can be made while trains are operating.

NYCT: It’s about time

MTA New York City Transit announced Dec. 10 that as part of its Save Safe Seconds campaign to safely improve subway performance, a multidisciplinary team of engineers and safety officials, working closely with the agency’s unionized signal maintainers, have begun raising “antiquated” speed limits on certain track segments and repairing faulty speed restriction signals throughout the subway system.
