RAC Members Earn Safety, Environment Awards

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on Dec. 1 announced the recipients of this year’s Safety and Environment Awards, “recognizing railways and railroaders who are driving meaningful progress in the way Canada moves people and goods.”

Transit Briefs: SEPTA, Baltimore Red Line, Metrolinx, DART

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) ridership for October 2025 decreases 3% from last year. Also, Baltimore’s Red Line project is slow moving; a new transit hub that will eventually serve Metrolinx’s Eglinton Crosstown is now open in Mount Dennis; and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) launches new ticket vending machines for easier fares.

The METRO Green Line Extension in Minneapolis marks a milestone. Also, final testing is under way for Sound Transit’s Federal Way Link Extension in Seattle and is complete for Metrolinx’s Finch West LRT project in Ontario, Canada; Southern California’s Metrolink expands its “smart” crossing technology; Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) postpones bus purchases, a station accessibility project, and the Frazer Railroad Facility expansion; and STM (Société de transport de Montréal) pursues mediation to avoid metro and bus driver strikes.

Transit Briefs: San Diego MTS, MDOT MTA/MARC, REM, Metrolinx

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the San Diego Housing Fund partner to deliver transit-oriented affordable housing in East Village. Also, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) will provide free MARC service to federal workers during the federal government shutdown; the Réseau express métropolitain’s (REM) Deux-Montagnes branch will begin service on Nov. 17; and Metrolinx enters into an Agreement-in-Principle to purchase a portion of track owned by CN between Bramalea and Georgetown GO stations.

Metrolinx next month will add a new GO Transit station in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Also, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is running longer trains in response to increasing ridership; and MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) in December will implement a route swap to improve train service between Manhattan and Queens.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit’s (SMART) Windsor Extension Project receives the American Society of Civil Engineer’s (ASCE) 2025 Outstanding Transportation Project Award. Also, the Ontario government breaks ground on the first of three stations for the Scarborough Subway Extension.

Seattle’s Sound Transit faces a multibillion-dollar budget shortfall and readies for the mid-life overhaul of its commuter rail fleet. Also, New Jersey Transit (NJT) brings the River LINE light rail operation and maintenance in-house; Atlanta Regional Commission and the City of Atlanta, Ga., consider relocating the Amtrak station; and “Libby” and “Corkie” will carve out Metrolinx’s first two Ontario Line subway tunnels in Toronto.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) Board approves a $50 million Construction Management Support Services contract. Also, Canada’s Metrolinx breaks ground on the second Ontario Line subway tunnel in Toronto; Chicago’s Metra commuter railroad opens a new Grayland Station and dedicates a new bridge over Milwaukee Ave.; Seattle’s Sound Transit beta tests a trip planning tool; and the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) issues a Request for Proposals for redevelopment of the Stamford Transportation Center.
