Transit Briefs: CATS, Denver RTD, Metrolinx, NYCT

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) in North Carolina is adding a new LYNX Blue Line station. In addition, Denver (Colo.) Regional Transportation District (RTD) is seeking consultant support for a system-wide fare study and equity analysis; Toronto-area regional transit agency Metrolinx has reported that its pedestrian bridge set a world record, and released a “first look” at construction of Eglinton Crosstown stations; and MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) has completed a security camera installation project.

Metrolinx’s Phil Verster and the ‘Network Effect’

Metrolinx News readers have seen a lot about the ‘network effect’ and what it means for riders. It refers to the opportunities that come with a stronger, more flexible transit system, with seamless connections across the communities, more frequent service and new projects that will, once opened, reduce crowding on existing lines.

Toronto’s SmartTrack Station Program Advances

The province of Ontario and the city of Toronto have signed a revised agreement in principle (AIP) for the SmartTrack Stations program, finalizing its scope and allowing Metrolinx to move forward with five new GO Transit stations.

Transit Briefs: Metrolinx, Caltrain, WMATA

Metrolinx has taken delivery of the last of 36 GO Transit bilevel commuter cars, which were ordered in September 2019. In addition, Caltrain service will surpass pre-pandemic levels starting Aug. 30, and Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) is adding more trains and buses and extending operating hours beginning Sept. 5.

Toronto: USRP Complete, USEP Under Way

After ten years and C$824 million, Toronto’s Union Station Revitalization Project (USRP) is complete, including the historic facility’s main passenger area, Bay Concourse, which was completely remodeled and expanded. Next up: Union Station Enhancement Project (USEP), which will improve the train platform space.

Yonge North Subway Extension Plans Advance

There will be a fourth station for the 8-kilometer (4.97-mile) Yonge North Subway Extension bringing the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) existing Line 1 subway to the cities of Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill, according to the governments of Ontario and Canada.
