Massachusetts State Rep. William Straus (10th Bristol) has filed two bills that, if approved, would leave MBTA charged with subway and bus services only.

Reports: CRRC MBTA Railcar Delivery Delayed Again

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) officials were recently notified that CRRC (China Railway Rolling Stock Corp.) will not be able to deliver the remaining Orange and Red Line railcars by December 2023 and September 2026, respectively, and could face “daily fines of $500 for each late car,” according to a Boston Herald report.

Legislation has been filed in Massachusetts that would require MBTA and its commuter rail contractor to operate a fully electric system in the commonwealth by Dec. 31, 2035.

RINA Acquires Patrick Engineering

Genoa, Italy-based inspection, certification and engineering consultancy firm RINA Group on Jan. 23 announced that it has entered the U.S. infrastructure market with the acquisition of Chicago-based engineering consultancy company Patrick Engineering Ltd.

Transit Briefs: LIRR, MassDOT/Northern Tier Passenger Rail, St. Louis Metro Transit

The opening date of the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Grand Central Madison station has been delayed due to an ongoing issue with an exhaust fan; Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) Northern Tier Passenger Rail service could cost up to $2 billion; and four MetroLink stations in St. Clair County will receive the system’s first fare collection gates next year.

Some older Orange Line cars may return to service, after MBTA pulled newer cars due to a power cable failure, according to a Jan. 7 Boston.com report.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) considers reinstating old Orange Line cars. Also, TEXRail celebrates four years of commuter service between Fort Worth and DFW Airport in Texas; Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Board approves 2023 operating and capital budgets; and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) advances its $179 million project to replace 130 escalators across 32 stations by 2028.

GoTriangle has released the results of the Greater Triangle Commuter Rail Feasibility study and seeks public feedback on proposed regional passenger rail service through Durham, Cary, Raleigh and Clayton, N.C.

In Massachusetts, the Joint Committee on Transportation on Jan. 3 released a report recommending that MBTA be charged with subway and bus operations only, not Commuter Rail, ferry and construction services, according to the Boston Herald.
