Transit Briefs: Hitachi Rail/MTA, NYMTA, WMATA, Tri-Rail, REM

New Hitachi Rail metro cars enter revenue service for the Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) Baltimore Subway Link. Also, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) celebrates a successful first anniversary of congestion pricing; the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) selects Atlantic Pacific Companies (A|P) for its Capital Heights project; Tri-Rail breaks its ridership record in 2025; and Otis completes a landmark installation at the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) light metro transit in Montréal.

LA Metro’s TAP-to-Exit program returns to North Hollywood and Union Station. Also, Jacobs and Kittelson secure a new planning contract with the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA); and the Montreal transit strike comes to an end as the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) maintenance workers’ union suspends work stoppage.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will modernize its entire fare collection system. Also, Tri-Rail will end $5 rideshare voucher program; DC Streetcar service will end on March 31, 2026; the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) restricts advertisements on train windows; the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) launches a new transit incentive to encourage Baltimore-area commuters to try transit; the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) invests $1 million in its safety and security program; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) PATH commuter rail achieves its second-busiest month since the pandemic; and TransLink celebrates 30 years of the West Coast Express.

The first trainset of R211A/S (traditional closed-end) cars to operate on the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) B Line enters service. Also, Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) releases its inaugural customer experience action plan.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) partners with E-Squared to inspire future engineers in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Also, the Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) multi-billion-dollar economic impact is unveiled in a Greater Washington Partnership report; Metra approves an $8.7 million contract for the rehabilitation of 115th Street/Morgan Park Station; and the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) breaks ground on the future Dos Rios Station on the Blue Line.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) receives a federal grant to improve passenger rail service and freight movement in the San Joaquin Valley. Also, New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) earns a spot on the Forbes 2025 America’s Dream Employers list; MTA Metro-North Railroad debuts its Holiday Lights Train; Utah Transit Authority (UTA) celebrates 25 years of TRAX light rail service; and Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) launches an online merchandise store.

Also, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) logs its 22nd consecutive month of year-over-year ridership growth; and Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) launches a strategic plan for development around MARC commuter rail stations.

Caltrain releases its new schedule for electrified service. Also, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) boosts Regional Rail service; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) reopens four Red Line stations; New Jersey Transit (NJT) launches the “Chance For Change” program; and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) expands a fare compliance pilot program and partners with a nationwide retailer on the free-fare student GoPass program.

Transit Briefs: Govt. of Canada/Govt. of Quebec, Amtrak/NJ Transit, TransLink, MTA (Maryland)

The governments of Canada and Quebec invest C$163.5 million to plan a structuring public transit project in Gatineau. Also, Amtrak and NJ Transit execute a joint plan to “accelerate investigations of disruptions and improve reliability” between New York and New Jersey; TransLink releases a corporate cost-cutting plan to address its funding gap; and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s administration moves forward with plans for a new light rail project in Baltimore.
