KCS names Jarboe Vice President Mechanical Operations

Kansas City Southern has named Gary W. Jarboe Vice President Mechanical Operations for Kansas City Southern Railway (KCSR), closely coordinating with the leadership of Kansas City Southern de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (KCSM). Jarboe, based in Kansas City, reports to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dave R. Ebbrecht.

Keolis, unions reach agreement in Boston

Keolis Commuter Services has reached agreement with all 14 of the labor unions representing 1,800 employees for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Commuter Rail service, which Keolis begins operating on July 1st.

NS/OL safety train visiting Delaware and Pennsylvania

Norfolk Southern and Operation Lifesaver are bringing their Whistle-Stop safety train tour to Delaware and eastern and central Pennsylvania to stress the importance of public safety around railroad tracks. It’s the third such trip this year for Norfolk Southern and OLI on the NS network. A fourth trip is scheduled for Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri later this summer.

AAR awards CSX employee top environmental honor

The Association of American Railroads has bestowed its highest environmental honor, the John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award, on Chris Durden, of CSX Intermodal Terminals.

Class I employment registers gains

Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board on June 17, 2014 show Class I total railroad employment rose 1.13% to 166,097 in mid-May 2014, measured against mid-May 2013, and was up 1.10% from mid-April 2014.

UP enhances premium intermodal service

Union Pacific has increased the frequency of two intermodal services, Portland-Chicago and Northern California-Chicago, both of which are part of UP’s top-tier “premium” intermodal service, with four-day delivery in the morning.

Safety-driven railway realignments

As railroaders, regulators, suppliers, and crude oil shippers convene at the Railway Age Crude by Rail Conference on June 12, they may ponder the full range of proffered remedies to exploding oil trains: re-classification of Bakken crude from merely flammable to explosive; de-gasification before loading; better track and car maintenance; tighter operating rules; sharing of consist details with first responders; and, of course, more robust tank cars.
