CP pursuing NS. Game on!

It’s official: Canadian Pacific on Nov. 17, 2015 sent an offer letter to Norfolk Southern proposing a merger (an acquisition, really) “that would create a transcontinental railroad with the scale and reach to deliver improved levels of service to customers and communities while enhancing competition and creating significant shareholder value.” On Nov. 18, CP, in response to NS’s tepid response to the initial offer, provided “full disclosure.”

CP-NS transcon a craps table roll

Few obstacles bedevil railroads as has the Mississippi River. Spanning it was the nation’s first rail bridge in 1856—promptly assaulted by steamboat Effie Afton. While the bridge was repaired and more constructed, the river remains a problematic divide, separating, with few exceptions, eastern railroads from those operating in the West and producing grueling interchange bottlenecks at Chicago.

BNSF evaluating drones in New Mexico

BNSF has tested a UAS (unmanned aerial system, better-known as a drone) supplied by Boeing Co. subsidiary Insitu Inc. in east-central New Mexico, on approximately 132 miles of main line track.

William J. Quinn, 1911-2015

William J. Quinn, whose 40-year railroading career culminated as Chairman and CEO of the Milwaukee Road, died Oct. 24, 2015 at the Glen Care Center in Glenview, Ill. He was 104.

CP + NS is in play: Reports

Canadian Pacific Railway has held early-stage merger talks with Norfolk Southern and is raising financing for an acquisition, according to Nov. 9, 2015 news reports citing confidential sources at both carriers. NS stock jumped 11%, the most since 2008, to $88.62 at the close of the New York Stock Exchange, while CP’s 5.7% rally to C$188.79 on the Toronto Stock Exchange was its biggest gain since 2013.

Norfolk Southern rolls out the GP33ECO

Linda J. Morgan, 63, the former U.S. Surface Transportation Board Chair who led the agency during the railroad megamergers of the 1990s, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, after a long battle with cancer.

H.R. 3763 receives House approval

Following three days of debate, during which more than 100 amendments were considered, the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 5, 2015 “overwhelmingly” approved the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform (STRR) Act of 2015 (H.R. 3763), “a bipartisan, multi-year surface transportation bill to reauthorize and reform federal highway, transit, and highway safety programs.”

AAR: Rail traffic decline steady with service, manufacturing sector divide

In reporting weekly U.S. rail traffic as well as volumes for October 2015 and the first 10 months of 2015, AAR Senior Vice President John T. Gray said that “a divide has opened up between the service sector, which appears to be fairly robust in many respects, and manufacturing, which appears to be facing increasingly strong headwinds, including international turmoil and slowdowns in the energy sector.”
